History

History of the Submarine Net Barrier

Net Barriers were manufactured at the Golden Horn (Haliç) Shipyard to prevent submarines from passing through the straits. Designed in a 4 X 4 mesh pattern, each section of the nets is square. Having a length of 60 meters and a depth of 30 meters, the Net Barriers were positioned between Akbaş Bay and Nara Point, as well as between Bigalı Castle and Nara Point. A total of 25 nets, installed between June 26 and July 27, spanned an area of approximately 1,500 meters between buoys. One of the 60-meter nets identified in Akbaş Bay stands as an example of these Net Barriers, still waiting to be explored by divers after 106 years.
